Gum disease can appear any time and without warning. One of the recommended non-surgical treatments for when gum diseases have developed into advanced periodontitis is root planing. If you are looking to find out more about this root planing in Hamden, read on…

What is root planing?

Also known as deep cleaning, root planing comes subsequently after teeth scaling. This procedure is used to get rid of tartar buildup on the roots of the teeth. During scaling and root planing, your dentist will clean between the gums and the roots of your teeth to clear away any disease-causing bacteria that may be present there. Tartar will be scraped away from your teeth and under the gumline.

The difference between scaling and root planing is that during scaling, your dentist removes away dental tartar from the surface of the tooth. While root planing is the smoothening of the surface of the root of the teeth and also removing any infected tooth surface.  Root planing can take more than one appointment to make sure each tooth is properly treated and to ensure comfort of the patient.

Who can get root planing?

For individuals with healthy teeth and gum, it is recommended that they get a regular checkup and dental cleaning twice a year. Root planing is usually recommended to those who suffer from advanced periodontitis (gum disease that has advanced past gingivitis).

What to expect?

  • It takes up to 1-4 visits to finish up the treatment.
  • The procedure itself does not hurt, anesthesia will be administered, however after the treatment you may experience slight discomfort.
  • After deep cleaning your gums will tighten up.
